A new beginning...

I haven't really been blogging lately, and I've missed it.

Let me explain...no, there is too much. Let me...no, I don't even feel inclined to sum up right now.

I'll say this, though: on the whole, the most satisfying blogging I've ever done has been right here on LiveJournal.

It's a new year, and I have a new home, and here I am, making a fresh start in familiar terrain.

Hey, here's an idea! If you're feeling inclined, leave a comment telling me something significant that has happened in your life in the past five years, and I'll reply with a tidbit of my own.

Who's here? Anyone? Hello, hello, is this thing on?

It's on. I've successfully weathered a housing crisis, and am well-established in a stable and compatible household.

Hello there!

Three years ago, I moved from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia to the upstate of South Carolina; this week, I moved to the high desert country in southern California.

Whereabouts? I used to do extended hiking in Kern County.

We're living in San Bernadino County, very near to National Trails Highway (what used to be U.S. Route 66). Joe started a new job in Palmdale, about an hour away, in L.A. County.

Hey! I'm actually here today thinking about deleting my LJ account. But your post is encouraging me to pause and think about it a little more.

Something significant from the last five years, hmm... You've been there for most of it, of course. :) There were two big things that stand out-- starting a school in 2013 and stepping away from it this past June. Both those things wrought big changes and both experiences have been mostly positive.

It's been a privilege for me to witness your experiences with the school, both working with it and stepping away from it. <3

My daughter started college this past fall, a full year earlier than I had thought she would. I can really feel the difference in her now when she comes home for breaks; she's grown tons.

I'm here. Not as often as once upon a time, but I need to write more.

Good to see you!

I want and need to be writing more, too. The combination of new year, new home on the other side of the country, and a few other transitions (personal, national...) has left me wanting to live a bit more deeply.

I'm here right now, was giving it one last look through before deleting my journal. I've backed it up to Dreamwidth. I don't know right now if I can delete...it's bittersweet. I miss it here. I hate how I've allowed myself to be sucked into LJ along with most of the folks I used to "know" here. FB is so much less satisfying and more stressful.

Deciding to homeschool has probably been the most significant thing I can think of. M will be 8 in March, and I'm so, so glad we decided to forgo school for him.

Homeschooling is wonderful!

It's been hugely comforting to me that my daughter and I have remained emotionally close throughout her teenage years and even now that she attends college many miles away. I'm so grateful that we both decided, years ago, to make that a priority. May it always be so!

I figured that was you ;). That's lovely that you are close with N. I sometimes worry about the tween/teen years, they will be here soon soon soon....

Via Floop/Swoop, I think you've witnessed big pieces of several significant things that have happened to me in the past few years: going from moderate to major depression, deaths in the family, choosing to exercise my creativity more...

I guess one thing I could mention is that I took several SoulCollage workshops in 2016, inspired by some of the SoulCollage cards that were shared on Swoop. I think maybe the first one happened before Dry Dock started, but the others were later. I really like the process of designing the cards and seeing what else they inspire, when they're done!

I have been curious about Soul Collage. Someday I may get around to giving it a try.

Creative expression has always been a high priority for me, perhaps even more so right now, as I begin to stretch my wings in this new setting.

As yolen said, I'm also thinking of switching to dreamwidth, since the Russian company that owns LJ has moved servers from the US to Russia; I like having at least the fig leaf of protection, even if it's delusional.

Significant for me has been losing a good boss and gaining a poor one. :-(

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear it! Having a bad boss is miserable. I hope that soon things will change for the better, one way or another.

I'll be looking for new opportunities to work as a music therapist here in southern California, ideally with older adults.

Five years ago, I had just given notice at my old job and began preparing to move to WV. I still come to LJ most days; FB is just unpleasant in many ways, so I'm almost completely disengaged. I subscribe to a bunch of feeds that show cute pictures and that's mostly it.

Every time I think of deleting my account, I think of the cousins and old friends with whom I would probably lose contact entirely. Maybe someday we'll all find a better way.

Ahhhh, Facebook. Or possibly arrrrgh, Facebook. I always associate it with these song lyrics:

"Maybe we'll leave come springtime
Meanwhile, have another beer
What would we do without all these jerks anyway
And besides, all our friends are here..."

Over the past decade, as you know, we have moved from New Jersey to West Virginia, to South Carolina, and now to California. To me, this most recent move feels the most acutely like brand new territory. I want to be positive about it, to focus on the opportunity rather than the loss.

Hello! I am that one Internet friend who has never left LJ what with my permanent account. I am a tightwad, so I am making the best of this investment.

As for significant events? Buying a new house, dealing with the old one (which we still need to put on the market), having elective foot surgery, and joining the Board of Directors for my professional organization.

Hmm---maybe I am not a tightwad.

Heh! I should probably strive to be more of a tightwad, myself.

Whenever I have taken a peek at my LJ friends feed over the past handful of years, I have noticed you as a solid, stalwart and highly articulate presence. I'm glad you're here.

'Ello 'ello! *waves back*

We moved ourselves into the new house we're renting on New Year's Eve. Our furniture won't arrive for another week, so we're roughing it, albeit very comfortably. :)
